Lake Ozarks Grotto is a not-for-profit organization composed of individuals who have a genuine interest in caves. The purpose of LOG is to advance the study and enjoyment of caves, to teach safety in cave exploration and to encourage good public relations between cavers and non-cavers. The Grotto is also a member of the Missouri Speleological Society.
LOG History
The Lake of the Ozarks grotto traces its roots to the Lake of the Ozarks Caving Club (LOCC) and is one of the oldest grottos in Missouri.
In the fall of 1967, Dwight Weaver and Frank Hurley co-founded the Lake of the Ozarks Caving Club (LOCC). Frank is the owner of Jacob's Cave and Dwight was, at that time, the general manager of Ozarks Caverns. Both show caves are in the Lake of the Ozarks area. Dwight and Frank were actively caving together and felt there should be an organized caving group in the lake area because the region has many wild caves.
The club became an affilliate of the Missouri Speleological Survey (MSS) in 1969 and then in 1974 was re-organized as the Lake of the Ozarks Grotto (LOG) when it became a chapter of the National Speleological Society (NSS). Although not currently a chapter of the NSS, the grotto does have members who belong to the NSS and several members who have been members of the NSS for more than 50 years.
The grotto's members stay busy locating, recording, exploring, and surveying caves as well as working on various volunteer cave-related educational and conservation projects. The grotto has a long history of contributions to the mission of the Missouri Speleological Survey, and seven members of LOG were the co-founders of the Missouri Caves and Karst Conservancy in 1992.
